Cook County Board Committee Passes Sanctuary Ordinance


CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A Cook County Board committee has narrowly passed a proposal to make the county a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

The vote was 3 to 2 in committee - on a move to make Cook County a safe space for undocumented immigrants.

Even the sponsor, Commissioner Roberto Maldonado, called it symbolic, because nothing would stop federal agents from making immigration raids.

"And it is symbolic to tell the people of Cook County who happen to be undocumented that, look, we recognize that we are a county of immigrants."

Commissioner Tony Peraica voted against the resolution. He says the County Board has no jurisdiction.

"And I believe this particular issue would create a false sense of hope in people's minds that they can, in fact, continue to stay in an illegal capacity with impunity."

The resolution also forbids county employees from asking people about their immigration status.

The resolution still has to go to the full board.

What is not symbolic is that I will not visit a sanctuary city. I am also opposed to the Olympics being hosted by an outlaw community. Get the word out.

We need a huge map with a big red dot for the santurary cities and instructions on how to get there from the border so these illegals will know just where to settle.

If you read the last line it appears it is not voted in officially quite yet. It mentions the resolution still has to go through the full board

Cut off federal reimbursements to Cook Co. for subsidies for illegal aliens and watch hospitals close and the county go belly up. If they have to find a way to foot the bill themselves, perhaps they'll reconsider.

I hope the full board vote is smart enough to say no. I think it would be a bad move not to be able to find someone's immigration status. Citizens should start protesting now to avoid it being passed.

How disappointing. I think Lou Dobbs counted it tonight as one of the seven sanctuary cities. But maybe there is hope yet if the full commission see's the light. I'm going to borrow these ideas and mention federal funds and the possible of an Olympic boycott if this goes through in a email tonight.

Waukegan is already an unofficial sanctuary city...
