N.J. senator targets immigrant hiring after AZ law upheld

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey Senate leader says he will push legislation to punish businesses who knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.

Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney says his decision comes after a federal judge upheld a new Arizona law that prohibits businesses from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants and yanks the business licenses of those that do.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service in 2003 estimated that New Jersey had 221,000 illegal immigrants.

Under Sweeney's measure, which he said he will introduce next week, first-time offenders would have their business licenses suspended for 10 days. Second offenses would bring permanent revocations.

On February 8th, a federal judge in Arizona dismissed a lawsuit filed by business groups against Arizona's law, which was approved last year by the Republican-led Legislature and Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano

A recent study by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) showed that illegal immigration costs New Jersey taxpayers $2.1 billion yearly in social services consisting of education, health care, and incarceration. The Inter-American Development Bank, an agency which monitors economic progress in Latin American countries, has documented that over $1 billion leaves the State of New Jersey to Latin American countries in the form of remittances sent by illegal immigrant workers to their home countries. http://

Wouldn't you think those people would be out raged...they must be unaware of the facts

The number is even higher. Almost 500,000 illegal aliens in NJ now.

What is interesting is this guy is a DEMOCRAT. He gets the fact that illegals are stealing jobs from Americans. Now if other democrats would start to wake up, we would start to see some real action. Especially here in NC.

What's more important is that he is the Senate Majority Leader and a powerful Union rep. He has the juice to make this happen.
