Drop house with 19 people discovered in Ahwatukee

Police discovered 19 suspected undocumented immigrants in an Ahwatukee Foothills home near 46th Street and Warner Road Thursday morning.

At 1 p.m., Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials had arrived and were in the home interviewing the 17 men and two women at the home in the 12800 block of South 46th Street.

Neighbors describe the area as quiet, peaceful and crime-free. The homes are relatively new.

A resident had called police Thursday morning to report someone was pulling on doorknobs of different houses in the neighborhoods, Phoenix Police Sgt. Leonard Pinuelas said. Police came to investigate and did not find the suspect but saw someone looking out of a window of the home and noticed that the garage door was open.

Police entered the home and found the suspected undocumented immigrants inside, Pinuelas said. The home has no furniture and the people had no food and were staying in "very bad conditions," he said.

Some had been here at least two weeks, Pinuelas said. But police reported that utilities had been turned on in the home less than a week ago.

Neighbors reported that an American flag had been hung on the house a couple of weeks ago.

Ian McGuigan said he thought the house had been rented out, and had noticed a white Nissan Pathfinder going in and out of the garage a lot.

"We kept seeing the truck and it made me wonder what was going on and why the garage door was always open," he said.

Some of the individuals were dehydrated. Phoenix Fire Department responded to the home to provide water to them.
