Former Mexican President Vicente Fox addressed questions of immigration, the U.S. economy and the future of his country Thursday evening during a question-and-answer session at The University of Texas at Tyler.

Representing the National Action Party, Fox was elected the 62nd president of Mexico in July 2000 and served until 2006. The presidential election in 2000 was the first time in 70 years that the Revolutionary Institutional Party candidate was defeated, and it was the first presidential election since the end of the Mexican Revolution to be generally considered competitive and fair, according to a UT Tyler statement.

When addressing questions about concerns over the number of illegal immigrants pouring into Texas and the United States from Mexico each year, Fox compared the migration to U.S. citizens traveling to China, India or other countries looking for jobs.

While Fox said he supports immigration, he does not support unlimited, unregulated or disorderly crossing.

"We need to make this a win-win situation," he said.

He supported allowing immigrants already employed in the U.S. to continue working here.

Fox criticized President Bush for saying the issue will be handled "tomorrow" and said he can only hope the presidential candidates will consider the issue.

"There is too much of a discrepancy between those who have too much and those who have nothing," Fox said. "The market economy has been the best way for creating wealth but not for closing the gap in poverty."

Fox said the way to reduce the poverty gap is through "powerful social policies."

Fox said the value of the U.S. dollar contributes to immigration from Mexico to the United States. He said that, years ago, workers in the U.S. made $10 for every $1 made in Mexico; now, that has fallen to $5 for every $1 in Mexico.

Fox was one of the few presidents of Mexico to avoid a major economic upheaval during his term in office, according to UT Tyler, and left his successor without any currency devaluation. According to Banco de Mexico, inflation rates during Fox's term went from 11 percent in January 2000 to 4.05 percent at the end of his term.

"What would be better for the United States having a healthy successful neighbor in Mexico," he said.

When asked if the U.S. should look at forming a North American Union with Canada and Mexico similar to the European Union, Fox explained the benefit.

"Today, being on your own, isolating yourself, building a wall is not the way to grow, develop or improve citizens' quality of life. Today not one single nation can survive on its own, not even the mighty powerful U.S.," he said.

Fox said that, to continue to have open markets and facilitate investments, a "wall needs to be torn down."

"We all remember Sept. 11. It was a sad day and none of us would like to see it happen again, but that is not a good explanation for building a wall," he said.

Fox was the featured speaker of the Drs. Lawrence L. Anderson and Svetislava J. Vukelja Lecture at The University of Texas at Tyler's R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.

The immigrants in the US have no problems maintaining their jobs. It's the illegal aliens who are not welcome to be here!
This clown needs to shutup, stay in his own country, and stop trying to change America's political process.

Translation: fewer walls would benefit Fox's own bank account.

Would one of those "powerful social policies" include the Matricula Consular cards being used by illegals to buy houses that can't be paid for with money from Banks that will extort funds from American taxpayers should everything meltdown at once?

Another way might be to go to the bank and hand your cash out to Mexico's poor. Oops. Forgot. You believe America's increasingly poorer middle-class should empty out their bank accounts, not Mexico's rich elites.

Even for an oily con artist like yourself, it's getting increasingly obvious, isn't it Vicente?

Ya, we wouldn't want a "wall" to get in the way of Johnny Sutton and his "Texas Drug Caravan".

pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!! Exactly how many American citizens does Fox think are illegally immigrating to China, India, etc.?

Fox needs to get head out out of his gluteus maximus and pay attention. I can't believe he's attempting to make a comparison that is non-existent to prop up a weak argument.

India has regulations against American citizens going to India and working there. When the Indian press discovered that fired American computer workers were curious about whether or not Americans could go to India to get work (after all, the Indian government published propaganda that said Indian companies were willing to hire Americans who had been fired from their jobs due to outsourcing!) some interesting "news articles" started to appear. One held up an example of an American computer programmer who frequented the night life of Bangalore becoming a welcome fixture of that city's pub scene. What the article failed to mention is that except for a few executives on loan every American citizen who goes to India to work as a computer programmer is forced to train another Indian worker who then replacing him once his training is done. In other words every job held down by an American is handed off to an Indian citizen and the American is fired because this is both the corporate and government policy of India!

Mexicans arent very good at lying or keeping secrets. I believe that Bush literally told Fox "tomorrow" because of the 700 billion dollar bailout. IMO, Bush is counting on congress to pass this thing today.

It would open the floodgates to hell.

    Former Mexico

Fewer walls, more armed military ( with loaded guns ) and orders to use them. More tanks, more tent processing centers to document the law breakers before sending them home.

Much more E-verify and no more rights to the citizens of Mexico who violate the immigation laws !

Seems we HAVE opened up and lost a huge amount of jobs "helping" the "global community" and it hasn't done squat for us. Even he said it USED to be 10 bucks here for every 1 in Mexico and now it's 5 bucks here to 1 buck there. Hasn't worked well has it? How about opening your doors? Oh no......you don't want foreign investors or foreign people in YOUR country! If this idea of yours worked, then why isn't Mexico in better shape? You could fix it yourself instead of expecting us to.
