Goodlatte Calls Illegal Immigration Top Domestic Issue
Tuesday August 08, 2006 8:29am

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Congressman Bob Goodlatte says immigration is the nation's Number One domestic issue, and the nation must secure its borders and enforce existing laws.

The Sixth District Republican told a business group in Harrisonburg Monday that the immigration issue has been building for two decades.

He says it's compounded by the problem of easy-to-get forged documents, which he says "every credit card company knows how to solve" with secure identification.

Goodlatte says the United States is a nation of immigrants, drawn from all over the world for opportunity. But he adds the U.S. also is a nation of laws.

The congressman says the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was created to reduce and eventually stop illegal immigration. But Goodlatte says it was enforced modestly at the outset and is hardly enforced at all Tuesday.
