Tancredo: immigration reform may push him into presidential
Tancredo: immigration reform may push him into presidential race
June 12, 2005
NASHUA, N.H. --U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo says he is so dissatisfied with the pace and direction of immigration reform, he is considering running for president to deal with it himself.
"If no one is willing to pick up the banner... yeah, I'll run," the Colorado Republican said Saturday during a visit to the state with the earliest presidential primary.
"Though I say that with a great deal of trepidation. It seems like a daunting task. But we need to get a president in there who will support this," he said. "I don't know what else to do."
Once, New Hampshire might have seemed an unusual backdrop for taking a stand on illegal immigration. But recently the state has been the focus of heated debate on just that issue.
Citing a need to uphold national security, several police chiefs have been using criminal trespassing laws to press charges against illegal aliens found in their communities.
The tactic, which has been challenged in court, has drawn praise and criticism from around the country.
Tancredo first visited New Hampshire in February, when he gave an award to New Ipswich police Chief Garrett Chamberlain, calling the chief a national hero for charging illegal immigrants with trespassing.
Tancredo said the reason for his visit to New Hampshire, and eventually to Iowa, is to get a leader in the White House who understands the threat illegal immigrants pose to the country's security.
He said federal prisons overflow with illegal immigrants, some of whom aim to hard people.
"And they need to be found before it is too late. They're coming here to kill you, and you, and me, and my grandchildren," he said, pointing at people in the audience. "It's just despicable."

It would be very nice to see Tom run for president however, I really don't see a chance of him winning against an opponet if he does run in 2008.
As I remember, there were a lot of good canidates I liked that don't even win at all.

For the person who said "illegals are here to kill you".
Chill out for God's sake.
Most illegals are here to improve their economic circumstances.
I am one of those many immigration reform advocates who believes that little or none of the blame for illegal immigration belongs with the illegals themselves.
The true guilty parties are the politicians, media, corporations, and special interest groups such as the religious left, which put their own selfish interests ahead of those of the people.
It is neither morally right nor is it politically smart to blame the illegals for illegal immigration. They are to a considerable extent pawns of the forces of greed who seek to destroy our country to make a fast buck.
So one thing I believe is that we make it absolutely clear that we insist that illegals return home not because we don't sympathize with their economic plight, but because their presence in this country is a tool being used by the forces of greed to make a few fast bucks even if it results in the elimination of the United States as a sovereign nation. (and, in the process, the elimination of everything we hold dear, including social justice and the bill of rights)

bot-feeder, there is plenty of blame to go around for this situation and the parties you mention are prime culprits. However, you cannot eliminate the blame from individuals. The corporations and the politicians do not force these people to come here. They go to extraordinary efforts to get here, risking their lives and breaking Federal law.
They are attracted by opportunity, but they have no compunction about breaking the law to get it. That makes them lawbreakers from the start (though entering the country illegally is a minor infraction). They are circumventing the system, and they are doing it consciously and deliberately. No matter how poor or undeducated, to fail to hold them accountable is to excuse illegal behavior. Besides it is condescending. When we gonna wake up?

I think stranger things have happened, than Tom Tancredo winning.
First of all, by 2007, he should be very well known around the country. Secondly, many so called experts predict that illegal immigration will be at the forefront as far as issues in 2008.
I think he's going to seem like a breath of fresh air to people. We're TIRED of Clintons, Bush's and so many others. I really think Americans want someone new with a CLEAR plan for the country. Someone they can relate to. Not a billionaire who's so politically entwined in Washington politics, that the people feel they're on the outside again looking in. I think America needs and will want a President who has walked a few miles in the shoes of an American Citizen, not someone who's a regular on Air Force One.

He's got my vote and probably most of the folks in Alipac. I just hope we can convince the rest of the country to return to some semblance of sanity by 2008.
