FALFURRIAS -- Authorities hope a new border safety initiative will save some lives this summer.

FALFURRIAS -- A new safety initiative will begin training Border Patrol agents to handle medical emergencies, authorities said. On Sunday, NEWSCHANNEL 5 cameras were there when 52 illegal immigrants were caught crossing the rough terrain into Falfurrias.

The group traveled for two days. Agents said the immigrants likely would not have survived another day under the sun.

"A lot of the people we encounter have already run out of their water. They've already run out of their food and they're hungry, dehydrated, tired, and its very, very rough for them," said Border Patrol E.M.T. agent Robert Dilly.
