    U.S. Border Patrol Weekly Blotter December 11, 2008 – December 17, 2008

    (12/17/2008)Border Patrol agents seized over 16,260 pounds of marijuana valued at $14,007,304. Agents arrested 10 criminal aliens and 4 gang members. There were 5 rocking incidents.

    *This overview is compiled from incidents reported to the Office of Border Patrol and is not intended to reflect all Border Patrol enforcement actions. Most arrests and seizures fail to meet the requirements for mandatory reporting to the Office of Border Patrol.

    Laredo Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,024 pounds of marijuana valued at $819,320 and a 2005 Ford Super Duty truck in Hebbronville, Texas. Agents encountered the vehicle on a local ranch, and upon seeing the agents, three occupants of the vehicle absconded on foot and were not found. Agents discovered 46 bundles of marijuana inside the vehicle.

    San Diego Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested two illegal aliens from Mexico near Boulevard, California. Both subjects claimed they were two of a group of five persons who were accosted in Mexico by bandits. The subjects stated that three armed bandits bound their hands and forced them to provide contact information for their relatives. The group of five subjects freed themselves and fled the area. The two subjects that were arrested stated that they crossed the international border some time later and walked north until they encountered Border Patrol agents.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 2,316 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,852,520 and recovered a stolen 2004 Dodge truck in Arivaca, Arizona. An agent observed a vehicle illegally cross the international border into the United States. Agents responded and followed the tires tracks until they came upon the vehicle, abandoned and covered in camouflage netting. Agents discovered 100 bricks of marijuana within the vehicle.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Naco, Arizona. Records checks revealed the subject was previously removed from the United States and was a convicted sex offender in the State of Illinois.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents discovered a tunnel approximately 200 yards west of the DeConcini Port of Entry near Nogales, Arizona. The tunnel originates in Mexico and exits in the United States, one foot north of the international border. The tunnel's exit, which was 12 inches by 19 inches, was concealed by a piece of dirt-covered foam. Mexican authorities were able to locate the tunnel's origin in Mexico.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from El Salvador near Willcox, Arizona. Records checks revealed the subject was previously removed from the United States. He was also convicted of solicitation to commit first degree murder in New York and sentenced to 62 months in prison.

    Del Rio Sector – Border Patrol agents responded to a request for assistance from local law enforcement authorities regarding a 1997 Freightliner tractor that had failed to yield to an officer. Agents responded and found the tractor in the brush. Agents tracked footprints leading away from the vehicle resulting in the arrest of 30 illegal aliens from China and one illegal alien from Cameroon.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 2,192 of marijuana valued at $1,753,760, a 2005 Volvo tractor, two utility trailers, and arrested a national of Mexico at the traffic checkpoint near Sarita, Texas. The subject presented himself and the tractor-trailers for inspection and a Border Patrol canine alerted to the trailers. Further inspection of the trailers revealed the narcotics hidden inside wooden boxes.

    Spokane Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Canada after he illegally entered the United States near the Porthill, Idaho Port of Entry. Records checks revealed the subject was previously arrested for possession of explosives with intent to terrorize.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents reported a tunnel discovery approximately 100 yards east of the DeConcini Port of Entry near Nogales, Arizona. The tunnel originates approximately two feet from the international border on the Mexican side and travels eight feet in the United States. The tunnel's exit in the United States was concealed by a piece of plywood and weeds.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 266 pounds of marijuana valued at $212,608, 10 grams of methamphetamine, $7,000 U.S. dollars, and a 2003 Ford Explorer near Willcox, Arizona. A United States Citizen (USC) and an illegal alien from Mexico were also arrested. Agents conducted a vehicle stop on the Explorer and discovered the narcotics. The USC engaged in a brief struggle with an agent, and both subjects absconded. Agents were able to track down and arrest both subjects.

    Laredo Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Laredo, Texas. Records checks revealed the subject had an active warrant of arrest for two counts of rape and two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child issued in Newton, Kansas

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,144 pounds of marijuana valued at $915,200 and a 1989 Ford F-350 pick-up truck near Donna, Texas. Agents observed the vehicle at an intersection with its headlights off. After observing agents, the driver of the vehicle proceeded to travel south toward the Rio Grande River until the vehicle became stuck in thick brush. The driver was able to abscond into Mexico and agents discovered the marijuana inside the vehicle.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico near Nogales, Arizona. Records checks revealed the subject had an active arrest warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14-years-old issued in Dallas, Texas.

    Yuma Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 1,659 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,326,800 and seized a 2005 GMC truck near Yuma, Arizona. Agents received a report of three vehicles illegally driving across the international border. Agents responded and located one of the vehicles. Upon seeing the agents, the driver turned the vehicle around and traveled toward the border. Agents successfully deployed a controlled tire deflation device, but the vehicle continued toward the border, ran into a gate, and the driver absconded on foot into Mexico. The marijuana was found inside the vehicle. Records checks revealed the vehicle's license plate was reported stolen. The other two vehicles were not located.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents reported the arrest of an illegal alien from Mexico who had a prior conviction for second degree murder in Yakima, Washington. The subject was sentenced to 114 months in prison and was subsequently removed from the United States.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents received a citizen’s report of a single-vehicle accident near Arizona City, Arizona. Agents responded to the scene and discovered two deceased subjects and eleven injured subjects. Agents coordinated emergency response and the injured subjects were airlifted to local hospitals. The eleven injured subjects were identified as illegal aliens from El Salvador and Mexico. The aliens interviewed stated that the smuggler, who was driving the vehicle, fled on foot following the accident. Records checks revealed the vehicle, a Ford F-250 pickup truck, was reported stolen.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested an illegal alien from El Salvador near Casa Grande, Arizona. During processing, the subject was identified as a member of the Mara Salvatrucha 13 gang. Records checks revealed the subject was previously removed from the United States and was convicted of identity fraud and hit and run in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

    Del Rio Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested a USC at the Highway 90 traffic checkpoint near Comstock, Texas. The subject failed to produce identification and a subsequent investigation revealed he had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Sonora, Texas for violation of probation on a burglary charge. During processing, the subject admitted to being a member of the Sureño 13 gang.

    Rio Grande Valley Sector – Border Patrol agents seized 3,379 pounds of marijuana valued at $2,703,200 and a 1999 Chevrolet cargo van in Garceno, Texas. An agent observed the driver of the van acting suspiciously at a gas station and reported the behavior to other agents. Agents responded to the area after the driver departed from the gas station and found the van abandoned. Agents discovered the marijuana inside the vehicle.

    Tucson Sector – Border Patrol agents arrested eight illegal aliens from Mexico and seized 1,385 pounds of marijuana valued at $1,107,680 near Arivaca, Arizona. After the aliens were apprehended, agents tracked the subjects' footprints back to a location where they discovered several bundles of marijuana hidden in the brush.
