WASHINGTON, D.C.

Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn. (3rd CD), issued the following news release:

A crucial part of addressing the illegal immigration problem is getting our borders under immediate control.

American law enforcement officers working along both the nation's southern and northern borders put their lives on the line every day trying to keep illegal immigrant drug traffickers and terrorists out of our country.

As courageous as these men and women are, they need more resources and more funding to truly succeed.

This month, the U.S. Congress passed legislation to provide more law enforcement resources on the U.S.-Mexico border.

This legislation will grant assistance in the way of 1,000 new U.S. Border Patrol agents, 250 Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, two additional Border Patrol bases and additional unmanned aerial vehicles.

These security improvements will help curb drug cartel activity along the nation's southern border and more is needed.

Along the U.S.-Canada border, CBP makes approximately 4,000 arrests and seizes about 40,000 pounds of illegal drugs each year.

Without a clear strategic plan for securing our northern border, the number of arrests and the amount of drugs confiscated will continue to grow.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to launch a cooperative effort between federal agencies to develop a strategy to prevent illegal drugs from crossing into the United States from the north.

An unsecure border is more than an illegal immigration problem, it's a very serious national security concern.
