Americans Should Wake Up Regarding The Dream Act

A few members of Congress are looking to revive the Dream Act, legislation designed to benefit illegal immigrants in ways that would make many citizens and other legal residents green with envy. FSM Contributing Editor Gabriel Garnica urges Americans to wake up to this latest absurdity emanating from Capitol Hill.

Anyone who thinks that the Left has any plans of surrendering, or even stemming its push to benefit and reward illegal aliens for breaking and mocking American law and those who follow it must be smoking The New York Times.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and others are pushing to revive one of the worst provisions of their failed Amnesty Act. This amendment to the defense authorization bill would be a huge financial windfall for millions of illegal immigrants. Named The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, this measure basically guarantees illegal immigrants a college education at much lower in-state rates. A simple review of this legislation demonstrates why anyone who supports this provision cares much more about illegal immigrants than either this country or those of us who lawfully live here.

Favoritism Wrapped in Ironic Injustice

Let us begin with the fact that this provision provides a channel by which an illegal immigrant minor can gain a green card both for himself and his family, thus providing a loophole and incentive for continued manipulation and abuse of the system. According to The Heritage Foundation, this measure provides backdoor amnesty to millions of illegal aliens who bring their children into The United States. Simply put, it rewards people for ignoring, mocking and breaking our laws by providing their children with cheaper college education. That’s like getting half tuition because you rob a bank. Anyone who knows the rational level of the liberal mindset should not be shocked by that one.

Secondly, the Dream Act actually favors those who break the law over those who obey it by, for example, charging a law-abiding student from one state who attends school in another three times the tuition charged to an illegal alien whose very presence in this country is a violation of federal law. In summary, this absurd piece of rubbish posing as legislation would actually make breaking federal law a pre-requisite to obtaining special favors and preferential treatment while punishing those who obey the law with disfavored status.

It is one thing to benefit those who break our laws, but it is the height of absurdity to then disfavor those who obey them as well. Anyone supporting this bill may have many agendas, but America and law-abiding Americans are certainly not on that list.

Will Likely Pass

It seems that most senators support this provision, making any filibuster or other effort a failing proposition. Also, in what should not shock anyone, the Bush Administration seems to be quietly pushing for its approval as well. All of this should be enough to make anyone who truly loves and supports this country sick to the stomach.

We are truly at the edge of the rational abyss when such a measure can become law in blatant mockery of the will of the vast majority of the American people.

Supporter Spin

I am amused by both the spin and tone of e-mails from various groups supporting this measure.

Such communications stress the fact that the measure supposedly requires certain demonstrations of moral character and good conduct and fulfilling certain guidelines. Most amusing, however, is the observation that millions of illegal minors attend school in this country, come from families that pay taxes and need this measure as a way of helping them achieve the American Dream and “give back to this countryâ€

Start calling again today. Durbin has waited until the colleges, National Education Association, CAtholic Church and LaRaza has had a chance to rally their supportors. We have been used and abused one more time.
