EL PASO, Texas -- The well-known Mexican University Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey opens a new prep-school campus in west El Paso with a ribbon cutting Monday.

This is the first location in the U.S.

Zulema Aguilar, academic director, said, "We promote ethics, social responsibility, languages, cultures, and science and technological field. But it will just be an integrated model."

Classes for grades 9 and 10 and possibly 11 will start on Aug. 8. About 100 students are expected to attend.

It can be found on 9,600 square feet of land at 5450 Hurd Place.

Leaders of the school said this venture into El Paso is an experiment to see how well it does in the U.S. If it’s successful they’ll consider moving on to other cities, including San Diego or San Antonio.

The institution is currently accepting applications. Tuition is around $8,000 a year.
