Canadian trucker accused of smuggling $2 million
Canadian trucker accused of smuggling $2 million
ASSOCIATED PRESS
10:37 a.m. November 10, 2008
DETROIT – Federal agents say a Canadian trucker was caught trying to smuggle $2 million of U.S. cash into the United States.
The driver had nothing to declare Friday when asked at a Michigan border crossing if he had alcohol, fruit, vegetables or money. Border officers were suspicious after an X-ray of his rig at the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit. A dog got excited, too.
Officers say they found 138 bundles of cash and six cell phones inside the walls of the truck. It's illegal to conceal more than $10,000 when leaving or entering the United States.
The driver, Eskender Mafarani, is accused of smuggling and making a false statement to officers. He hadn't appeared by Monday afternoon in federal court.

BORDER PROTECTION
*************************
$2,087,870 seized at Detroit’s Fort Street Cargo Facility
DETROIT, MI - (November 10) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Fort Street Cargo Facility discovered a total of $2,087,870 in undeclared currency in a commercial truck attempting to make entry into the U.S. on Friday, November 7, 2008.
The truck was entering the U.S. on Friday, November 7, 2008, approximately 12:30 p.m.
The driver, a Canadian citizen from Richmond Hill, Ontario, told the inspecting officer that he was delivering produce to the west coast.
When asked about the amount of money he was carrying the driver declared $700 U.S.
The truck was referred to CBP secondary for inspection utilizing gamma ray inspection technology (GRIT).
During this inspection officers discovered anomalies in the area around a window in the cab of the truck.
A canine team entered the cab resulting in a positive alert to the same area of the cab.
Officers then removed the window molding and found several plastic wrapped packages in a natural void around the window.
Officers removed a total of 140 plastic wrapped packages from the hiding place.
Conduct of a currency verification showed that the packages contained $2,087,870 U.S.
The driver was arrested and turned over to special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

It's good when they find cash. If they find drugs they have to destroy them. When they find cash the money goes for law enforcement purposes.

Not in Detroit it doesn't. And the narcotics usually get lost somewhere too. That happened there back in the early 70s when the customs agaents found a whole bunch of hash, and heroin in a truck coming from the provinces. A few days later, it couldn't be found, and never made it to the incinerator.
Detroit has the most corrupt city government in the nation from last reports. Just look what happened to Mayor Quami recently.
