A Phoenix woman was sentenced Monday to 21 months in federal prison for attempting to smuggle two children across the border and selling her identity to an illegal immigrant.
Veronica Sanchez, 32, tried to bring a 10-year-old girl and a 1-year-old-boy, both Mexican citizens, across the border at Nogales in October 2007, said a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Sanchez tried to pass the children off as her own. But when she was questioned by customs officials, she admitted she did not know either child, the release said.
Sanchez told officials she had arranged with a man to take the children to Phoenix. In exchange he would smuggle her deported common-law husband into the United States, the release said.
A pre-sentence investigation also revealed that Sanchez had sold her identity to an illegal immigrant in Phoenix, between December 2002 and May 2008.
Sanchez helped the woman obtain a fake Social Security card with Sanchez's number and other fake documents so the woman could work illegally at a Phoenix-area grocery store.
In exchange, Sanchez collected the woman's tax refund, the release said.
