EL PASO, Texas — The FBI is investigating a reported El Paso hit-and-run and police chase involving a vehicle that may have ended up in a deadly shootout in Mexico.

The crash happened at an El Paso intersection just before 1 a.m. Sunday. Police say officers spotted a sport utility vehicle leaving the scene and chased it toward the Zaragoza International Bridge. Police spokesman Michael Baranyay says gunshots were fired at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection bridge checkpoint before the SUV crossed into Mexico.

News reports say the SUV may have been involved in a shootout near the Benito Juarez police station in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, a short time later. The reports say five people were killed or wounded, but it's unclear how many of each.

The FBI is investigating on the U.S. side, but an FBI spokeswoman didn't return a message left Sunday.
