Immig provision has Hisp Caucus threatening ‘no’ health

Immigration provision has Hispanic Caucus threatening ‘no’ health vote
By Jared Allen - 03/10/10 08:21 PM ET

A group of Hispanic lawmakers on Thursday will tell President Barack Obama that they may not vote for healthcare reform unless changes are made to the bill’s immigration provisions.

The scheduled meeting comes as Democratic leaders and the White House are struggling to craft a final bill that will attract 216 votes in the lower chamber.

Unlike abortion, immigration has flown beneath the radar, and almost seemed to vanish altogether as House Democrats have wrestled with how to accept a Senate healthcare bill far different from the one they passed in November.

But immigration remains just as explosive an issue and carries the same potential to derail the entire healthcare endgame, a number of Democrats said.

“It’s still one of those issues that’s out there,â€

They claim that while it may be politically popular in some parts of the country to ban illegal immigrants from using their own money to buy coverage, it is not good policy. Illegal immigrants will, one way or another, need medical attention in the United States, and it would be cheaper and more humane to provide them coverage if they pay for it. Otherwise, they will seek treatments in the nation’s emergency rooms, effectively increasing medical costs
    .

The obvious argument to this is if they are illegal, they shouldn't be here in the first place. This points to the failure of the government to protect our borders from economic assault.

Since illegals would not have the same requirement to BUY health insurance that a citizen would, they probably won't BUY health insurance.

They are being treated for free in hospitals all over the country because the Federal government dictates that they must be treated. Why would they pay for what they get for free anyway? The "caucus" is spinning BS.

I had to put on my hip waders to read this one.

On the other hand, the Hispanic Caucus could help defeat this awful healthcare bill so we could start over and get decent reform. That would be a good thing in my opinion.

That is a good thought ReggieMay.

I have the feeling that they are cutting a "deal" to get the existing illegals insured and all that follow. It seems that the the existing work force is no longer needed in this country, they need to be replaced by outsourcing or illegal immigrants.

I cannot believe we have a group of elected represenatives, seemingly elected by the American people ( honestly, i'm really beginning to wonder about that) in the US CONGRESS who are fighting over legalizing millions of people who entered this country in violation of our immigration laws; all while millions lf Americans citizens are out of work, losing homes and wondering how they are going to put food on the table.

    Amazing!

Gutierrez: Health bill's immigration parts enough to vote against
    By Michael O'Brien - 03/11/10 05:20 PM ET

The healthcare bill's immigration provisions are enough to spur Hispanic members of Congress to vote against it, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) said Thursday.

Gutierrez, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) in which he serves as chairman of its Immigration Task Force, said the caucus still has concerns over the extent to which the healthcare bill excludes illegal immigrants as well as legal residents from receiving benefits in the healthcare plan.

"They are enough to say I can't support this bill," Gutierrez said during an appearance on MSNBC.

Gutierrez and other members of the CHC to express concerns about the immigration provisions in the bill, about which they've begun to speak out more forcefully as a vote on healthcare approaches.

The Illinois congressman, who was an early supporter of President Barack Obama's run for the Oval Office, said that the immigration provisions were very unlike the president, and suggested someone in the White House had urged him to back more stringent provisions on immigration.

"I think someone at the White House might have told him that's a good way to leverage one thing or another," said Gutierrez, who declined to say who that person might be.

Exactly! Good for them, I hope they don't vote for this bill and it fails miserably.

Ironically enough, I believe it's worth mentioning the hispanic caucus isn't voting against this bill because it's bad for Americans, they are going to vote against it because it's bad for illegal invaders!

Why would a group that is so obviously not interested in representing American citizens be allowed to remain in a position to represent American citizens?

One has to believe this is not what our founding fathers had in mind.....
