Thread: VA: Manassas Adopts Tough 287(g) Agreement

The Manassas City Council endorsed a very tough agreement with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Section 287(g) with another unanimous vote that I understand will now form the template for all other 287(g) agreements in the area. As is common with these agreements, there’s a long list of crimes which will trigger a screening for legal status, and this is one of the most extensive I’ve seen. The various agreements in Prince William County, and even in Manassas Park are currently being negotiated to be consistent with what Manassas City will have in place, or are in the process of being amended, and soon the entire area will have one set of rules that span all the participating jurisdictions and law enforcement agencies, making it much easier for shared services such as the Adult Detention Center.

The highlight of the evening was probably watching Mexicans Without Borders waltz in to Council Chambers about fifteen minutes after the vote was taken and get completely unhinged during Citizens Time because they couldn’t try to bully the council into becoming illegal alien apologists before the vote. Nancy Lyall even suggested that the Section 287(g) Program was illegal, despite being a federal program in place in something like five states and thirty local jurisdictions since it was created, and became completely unglued. John Steinbach started shouting again, but at least didn’t wag his finger and make threats as he so often does.

The owner of the property where the illegal alien billboard in the Historic District still remains rambled on a bit about how important it is to follow the law, which I found rather humorous. It is reported that the fire that damaged Mr. Fernandez’s historic property was a result of his attempt to subdivide his basement (without a building permit) so spaces could be unlawfully rented out to illegals and unlawfully overcrowd the house, until a shoddy electrical job which was never inspected as required by code managed to set the structure on fire. Then after ignoring requirements to protect the structure it was condemned by the city, and he was ordered to demolish it. Mr. Fernandez failed to complete that demolition and instead retained a side wall on which he erected a billboard that violates city ordinances regarding signage, in the historic district no less.

And this guy has the temerity to tell the City Council that he follows the law, and is an example somehow of how illegal aliens are law abiding people. No wonder these folks can never win a vote. I only wonder how elected officials can resist the urge to break out in laughter when they hear such patent absurdities. The self-restraint that these public exhibit is truly impressive.

So once again the illegal alien lobby loses a vote, and not by a little. Again, this was a unanimous vote. I think it’s starting to get to them that no matter what they do, they just keep on losing.

Manassas council OKs federal immigration enforcement for police

The Manassas City Council unanimously authorized its police department to begin enforcing federal immigration laws.

The Council’s vote on Monday night authorizes police chief John J. Skinner to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Homeland Security that will give city police a broad-ranging tool to fight illegal alien criminal activity in the city.

According to the city’s draft memorandum, all illegal immigrants convicted of state or federal felony crimes against persons, property and society could be subject to deportation. People who commit more minor offenses including trespassing and disorderly conduct could be subject to deportation as well.

This list of offenses also match those in the separate agreements that Prince William County, Manassas Park and the Prince William Sheriff’s Office are negotiating with Homeland Security and are identical to the one the town of Herndon has submitted, said Skinner.

Under the agreement, the officers trained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers would “have the power and the authority to interrogate any person believed to be an alien as to his right to be or remain in the United States and to process for immigration violations… .â€
