The man who struck and killed Daniel Pollack with his vehicle before fleeing the scene is an illegal immigrant, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office announced in a press release.

Cristino Torres Romero was arrested in Tempe by Scottsdale police on Friday in connection with the Sept. 11 hit-and-run, the release said.

MSCO regularly investigates the immigration status of anyone booked into jails as part of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's efforts to fight illegal immigration, the release said.

Pollack's father, Valley real estate mogul Michael Pollack, offered a large reward for information that lead to the driver of the vehicle in the fatal hit-and-run.

The man suspected in the Scottsdale hit and run that killed the son of Valley real-estate developer Michael Pollack is in the country illegally, Scottsdale police said Monday.

Scottsdale police arrested Cristino Torres-Romero, 33, Friday after an anonymous tip led them to Torres-Romero's house in Tempe.

It is Scottsdale's policy to ask immigration status of anyone arrested and booked into jail. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been notified, but the man is in a Maricopa County jail, said Officer David Pubins, a Scottsdale police spokesman.

Torres-Romero was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of a Sept. 11 fatal crash. Daniel Pollack, 31, was struck and killed about 1:15 a.m. on Hayden Road just north of Thomas Road. Witnesses said Pollack was standing on the striped median and not in a crosswalk when he was hit.

According to police, Torres-Romero's F150 pickup showed signs that it was possibly involved in a fatal hit and run. The man admitted to detectives that he left the scene after striking Pollack that night, police said.

I am happy that this guy was caught. Michael Pollack was my landlord for over 5 years for my business until I moved to a new location last year. I knew Daniel and had last talked to him last November as he attempted to keep us from moving. His Father Michael is a very wealthy man and owns numerous commercial real estate properties throughout the Phoenix area and practically owns just about all of Chandler. He deals with illegal immigrants on many of his properties and I would suspect this will probably cause him to look at illegal immigration in a new light as Daniel was his only Son. Very tragic event. I can guarantee you Janet will hear from him as he was a big donator to Arizona politics.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the hit-and-run death of Daniel Pollack allegedly at the hands of a man illegally in the U.S. shows why immigration enforcement is necessary.

Pollack, 31, was the son of Mesa real estate investor Michael Pollack. He was killed earlier this month in a hit-and-run accident in Scottsdale near Hayden and Thomas Roads.

Scottsdale Police arrested Cristino Torres-Romero, 33, and charged him with a felony count of leaving an accident scene. Torres-Romero allegedly was driving his Ford F-150 when it struck Pollack. There are indications Torres-Romero was in the U.S. and working illegally under fake identification.

Arpaio said Michael Pollack was a personal friend and that he wished one of the MCSO’s immigration raids had nabbed Torres-Romero before the fatal accident.

Arpaio said the incident also shows the need for enforcing immigration, identity theft, human smuggling and other laws related to illegal immigration. The sheriff said his raids often are faulted for breaking up families and going after workers but they also apprehend criminals and others with nefarious motives.
