Council will weigh resolution opposing car impound measure
    Peter Marcus, DDN Staff Writer
    Monday, July 28, 2008

The Denver City Council will raise a proclamation tonight that would express opposition to a ballot initiative that asks Denver voters to authorize police to impound cars driven by illegal immigrants.

Spearheaded by Councilman Paul Lopez, the proclamation is the first in four years that asks the Council to oppose a citizen’s initiative, according to Kelly Vélez, City Council secretary. On July 12, 2004, the Council voted to oppose an initiative that would have banned all circuses in the City and County of Denver.

Lopez said the Council should oppose Initiative 100, which voters will see in August, because it is unnecessary and would place a strain on police resources. He already has the support of his colleagues Councilman Rick Garcia and Councilwoman Judy Montero.

They don’t want to leave it up to the voters because they know it will pass. Then they will need to go to the courts to overturn it. That's when it gets messy for the politicians.

Why are all these hispanic city council members opposed to this sound proclamation!! The feel it's "unnecessary" to keep unlicensed and uninsured drivers off our roads? I'm sick and tired of these ethno-centrics in our local, state and national governments!

How ironic is it that all those fighting the initiative have surnames that are typically considered Latino (Lopez, Velez, Garcia, and Montero)? IMO, as Americans, they should be more concerned about the safety of Americans, and less about the welfare of illegal aliens. Hopefully logic and reason will win out over misplaced loyalty.

In the 1970s there was a great commercial for Volkswagen, in which someone took a sledge hammer and smashed the Beetle. What a great idea instead of waiting for a tow truck.

Just found my Egyptian driver's license, which friends bought for me in 1974. Never took a driver's test or written test but it is complete with picture, and completely written in Arabic, which I don't speak. I would have a good laugh demanding a state license from DMV, but alas, not enough time.
