A man Columbus police say has been in the country illegally for 16 years was charged Saturday after his truck ran over his infant daughter in their driveway, seriously injuring her.

Anthony Alvarado, 26, faces charges of serious injury by vehicle, no state driver’s license, no state tag and no proof of insurance, reports state.

Police say Alvarado left his 1 1/2-year-old girl unattended in the front yard of their 23rd Avenue home about 3 p.m. when his 1997 Ford Explorer struck her. Officers responded to the accident and found the girl, Melany, unconscious.

“Her eyes are closed and she’s not crying,” Lt. James Walton said. “He’s saying his truck ran over her while she was playing around in the truck.”

Officers discovered the SUV had no insurance and no state tag. Alvarado had no driver’s license, and he told officers he’d been in the country illegally for 16 years, reports state.

Melany was taken to The Medical Center and then to Childrens at Scottish Rite, Walton said.
