Cochise County residents seeing 'red'
March 28, 2005, 07:24 PM CST

This Friday, up to 1,000 volunteers will be in Cochise County as part of the Minuteman Project.

They say they will be protecting our borders. Some will be armed.

Today, another organization is drumming up support for a more secure border, but it has some residents seeing red.

On 8th Street in Douglas Arizona, the neighborhood is blanketed with flyers. The flyers question illegal border crossing -- is it Immigration or Invasion?

They flyer states: "If current trends continue, whites will be a minority." It also says non-whites are turning America into a 3rd world slum.

Douglas Mayor, Ray Borane, says, "95 percent of Douglas is Hispanic and I take it personally. I take it as a major insult."

The flyers are being distributed by a group calling themselves "National Alliance". They claim they're an organization of "whites" who aren't afraid to speak up for the race.

Mayor Borane says, "Their presence here is nothing but detrimental. It's detrimental economically. It's detrimental socially."

Residents who woke up and found the flyer in their yard are extremely upset.

Ramona Picone says, "It's very scary cuz you don't know what they're gonna do."

Rhonda La Madrid says, "I don't appreicate it. I think it's making us insecure about being here in the U.S. People have a right to be here."

Not only are these flyers distributed in Douglas, they're being passed out in Sierra Vista and Tombstone, and its here where the Minuteman Project will be gathering on Friday.
