Arizona-style immigration law passes Senate Committee

Indianapolis —
A bill that would crack down on illegal immigration passed a Senate Committee Wednesday.

The eight to one vote came after hours of testimony over the proposal.

"This would enable all meetings, electronic communication, all those things only be done in english. You're alienating a whole group that doesn't speak that language," opponent Savannah Enqhy said.

Supporters claimed the federal government has not done enough on immigration causing the loss of jobs in millions of services.

"Because those laws are not enforced, it puts so much downward pressure on those who are operating legally that its driving us out of business," supporter Anne Craig said.

The bill would include police asking for proof of citizenship or immigration status if they have a reasonable suspicion someone is here illegally.

Official state documents would also be issued in English only and employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants would face serious punishment.
