Congress Must Pass Workable Immigration Program in 2007

Border Security + Private Sector Guest Worker Program Keys to Much-Needed
    Solution

DENVER, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In his State of the Union
address to the nation last night, President George W. Bush again called for
a temporary guest worker program as part of an immigration reform package.
Helen Krieble, noted immigration policy expert and President of the
Vernon K. Krieble Foundation, said President Bush was right to address the
issue of illegal immigration, but Congress must not approach the issue in
the same piecemeal fashion that failed in the last session.
"The best way for this new Congress to achieve its goals is to enact a
workable program, which secures the border and deals with illegal
immigrants already living here. This should have nothing to do with
citizenship, only the opportunity to work legally.
"A guest worker program will only work is if it is established and
managed by the private sector. Workers and employers must be driven by
incentives. Employers, who would face stiff fines for hiring illegal
workers must also have the ability to hire legal workers. Workers who are
in the U.S. illegally must have incentives to go home and apply for legal
work in the U.S. If illegal aliens do not have the opportunity to quickly
gain legal status, they will never leave. Such a program, like the one
drafted by the Vernon K. Krieble Foundation, would allow illegal workers to
emerge from the shadows and participate in the most prosperous economy in
    the world.
"But the federal government bureaucracy has proven to be incapable of
handling the illegal immigration problem. Spending billions more on border
security alone -- and adding thousands of new federal employees -- without
a workable solution to the country's labor needs will not work.
"Congress may have new leadership, but it still faces the same problem.
All sides must spend the time to understand this issue, to honestly assess
the problems at hand and enact a fair policy that will actually work," said
    Ms. Krieble.

Every business in the country already has the ability to hire legal workers Ms. Krieble - always have, always will.

    So very sad

I'd say condoleeza's face said it all last night. We're in serious trouble America... I just recieved a letter from Joe Knollenberg - "Congress rep of 9th district MI" that states "National Guard members are deployed to the Southern border to increase border security BUT they are unarmed and cannot do anything except call the border patrol to do the impossible. It's all smoke in mirrors people and if we lose this battle against illegal immigration, it will go down in history as the fall of the United States...
    It's now, or never America!

You noticed that look too, huh? Perhaps inclusion of more fiber in her diet would cure what appeared to be a serious problem with constipation. Either that or she needs to stop betting on the losing rooster at those Mexican held cock fights in Virginia.

Well, count me in as a mad mom willing to go to the border....unarmed too !! (I'll cross my fingers some Border Patrol agents or the National Guard won't be too far away).

Regarding a guest worker program. If it was a program where there was no path to citizenship, more like an apprenticeship in the USA, closely monitored with a revolving door, they're in for a certain time and then out and new ones have an opportunity to come. The first groups come from the population of illegals already here who could qualify the rest get sent home. No citizenship.

    Still no?

What bothers me most is this idea that the ones who have succeeded in getting away with breaking our laws get to stay....and have citizenship. Some compromise. At least this should be compromised comprehensive immigration reform with a TRUE compromise.

I don't make the decisions around here and I am not the Decider. However, in all honesty, is there anyway we are going to end up with ZERO immigration reform? Or is a compromise our best and only hope?

Maybe William could answer that for me unless he's busy. I would welcome anyone's opinion on that.

    Legaluscitizen,
We could call ourselves the (M@M'S) Mad Moms!!!!
I want comprhensive compromise, where they are doing all the compromiseing. Say they just go home and we won't arrest them and put them in jail before we send them home, their families won't get split up because they were breaking the law. sounds like a good compromise to me.
