TX: Mission club owners jailed for using illegal immigrants

Mission club owners jailed for using illegal immigrants as 'barmaids'

A Mission couple is expected to face a federal judge after they allegedly imported illegal immigrant women to work as barmaids in their nightclub.

U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Tereso and Nancy Olivo on harboring illegal immigrant charges late last week.

The couple owns the El Centenario Bar off Western Road in Mission.

Court records released in the case on Tuesday show that an investigation into illegal activity at the bar started back in April.

Authorities later learned that Murrillo paid for the women to be smuggled into the United States and then had them work in his bar.

Authorities found at least five women living at an apartment attached to the couple’s La Homa Road home.

The women are now being held as witnesses in the case. They told investigators that they each paid at least $20 dollars a month for electricity at their apartment.

The Olivos and the five women appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Friday.

Court records show that both of them were born in Mexico.

Judge Ormbsy denied bond for the Olivos until a Wednesday morning hearing.

The five illegal immigrant women are being held as material witnesses in the case.

McALLEN — A couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor illegal immigrants in federal court on Friday.

Tereso Murrillo Olivo and Nancy Olivo pleaded guilty to the charge to U.S. District Judge Randy Crane, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Houston.

As part of the plea agreement, the couple forfeited El Centenario Bar, which they had owned and operated.

The couple confessed to employing undocumented immigrants at the bar, on the 7200 block of Western Road, northwest of Mission.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested the couple in September, when three undocumented immigrants were found living at their home.

Sentencing for the couple is set for Jan. 10, 2011. They each face up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

McALLEN — A Mission couple was sentenced Monday after they pleaded guilty last year to federal immigrant smuggling charges.

The sentences came after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Tereso Murillo Olivo and his wife, Nancy, in September 2010. The couple ran El Centenario Bar and admitted to harboring illegal immigrant women working as barmaids at the rural Mission establishment.

U.S. District Judge Randy Crane sentenced Tereso Murillo Olivo, 55, to 15 months in federal prison without parole and two years of supervised release for his role in the crime. Nancy Olivo received a sentence of one month already served in jail and two years of supervised release, which includes six months of home confinement.

The couple pleaded guilty to the federal charges in October.

The first article states: Court records show that both of them were born in Mexico.

If that's true I would say they deserve to have their legal status taken away and be deported.

IMO combining E-Verify and worksite enforcement with a little jail time for employers is going to be necessary, to remove the job magnet which is responsible for illegal aliends entering the United States. Illegals are just trying to improve their situation in life. Their illegally undercutting Americans is only possible because employers are willing to give them jobs. Fines can be factored into the cost of doing business, but very few people want to spend even short periods in jail.
