Police: SoCal robber poses as immigration agent

EL MONTE, Calif. (AP) -- A Los Angeles County man is behind bars for allegedly robbing at least eight people while posing as an immigration agent.

Police say 33-year-old Noel Gutierrez of El Monte was booked on suspicion of robbery and kidnapping and will be arraigned on Tuesday.

El Monte police Detective Ralph Batres says Gutierrez approached the victims in El Monte and Rosemead on Saturday, convincing one man to withdraw money from a bank account so he could "post bail." Gutierrez also allegedly took cash and other valuables after demanding to search the purses and wallets of at least six others.

Batres says Gutierrez was wearing identification for the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the federal agency that was replaced by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
