Trial for suspected smuggling ringleader delayed

Only nine fugitives remain among those indicted in a federal probe targeting a large-scale human smuggling network in Bowie, officials said last week.

More than 50 people were charged in October for their involvement in a family-run ring, known as the "Juarez Alien Smuggling Organization" (JASO), which is suspected of bringing thousands of illegal immigrants into Arizona.

Forty-four people were in custody and 11 remained at large, Susan Herskovitz, FBI spokeswoman, said at the time. Tammy May of Bowie was arrested last week in New Mexico, said Wyn Hornbuckle, public information officer with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona in Phoenix.

May was charged as a money transmitter/receiver in the scheme.

Among those named in the indictment were the suspected ringleader, Pablo Esteban "Stevie" Juarez, 31, and his wife Lori Ann Juarez, 30, a.k.a. Lori Gutierrez.

Juarez allegedly inherited the organization from his father, Marcos Ruiz Juarez, and his brother, Marcos Abel "Abey" Juarez, who were also indicted for assisting in the administration of JASO.
