A short news article about illegal immigrants being caught, and then turned over to federal authorities, from my my hometown.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) Minot police say a routine traffic stop led to the arrests of two men from Mexico and a juvenile for immigration violations.

Police say an officer stopped a vehicle Saturday in Minot and found two of its three occupants were in the U.S. illegally.

Another vehicle arrived on the scene and authorities said one of its occupants also was an illegal immigrant.

Police say two men, ages 34 and 26, and a 17-year-old boy were taken into jail and turned over to the Border Patrol.

An exceedingly logical series of event, no? And one would assume that once in federal custody these illegal immigrants would get a perfunctory hearing to nail down for certain their citizenship status before being deported.

So why doesn’t this happen more often? Why don’t local and federal authorities work together all the time to detain and deport illegal immigrants as they’re found all over the country? We’re often told by the apologists for illegal immigrants, and the proponents of illegal immigration amnesty, that we cannot possibly round up all of the illegal immigrants in the country and deport them. And yet, we could if we’d only act to seal the southern border and then focused on deportation by attrition. Let our law enforcement officers - local or federal - detain illegals as they’re found and turn them over to the proper authorities for prompt deportation. If we took those steps I can’t help but feel that illegal immigration would dwindle down to acceptable minimums.

Now, I’d suggest that we could such reforms with efforts to make legal

immigration and cross-border economic transactions (free trade) easier so that there is less motivation for Mexicans to illegally immigrate, but even without those additional reforms there’s no reason why we couldn’t be minimizing the number of illegals here now.
