Donald Trump's immigration plan to deport 11 million people in the United States illegally has the support of nearly half of likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers in the latest Iowa Poll out Tuesday, conducted by Des Moines' Selzer & Co. for Bloomberg Politics and The Des Moines Register.
Asked whether they would support such a plan, 47 percent of likely GOP attendees said it would be a "good way" to deal with the situation, 37 percent said it would not, and 16 percent said they were not sure. Among those who said they would vote for Trump, the plan registered even greater support.
Given a list of issues and asked to assess where Trump would be most successful, 66 percent of all likely participants said immigration would be a strength, while just 29 percent said it would be a weakness. Trump's greatest strengths in the poll included international trade (88 percent strength to 10 percent weakness), creating jobs (87 percent to 10 percent) and improving the economy for the middle class (84 percent to 13 percent). At the bottom of the list: "understanding Iowa" (46 percent to 45 percent), cooperating with Congress (43 percent to 51 percent) and improving race relations (42 percent to 47 percent).
And asked whether they were bothered that Trump, a Presbyterian who says he attends church but has remarked that he has never asked God for forgiveness, 57 percent said it did not bother them, while 36 percent said it did.
The poll was conducted Aug. 23-26, surveying 400 likely Republican caucus-goers with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
