Harrington Council Will Not Consider Illegal Alien Ordinance
10/17/2006

HARRINGTON- The Harrington City Council has ditched a plan that would have fined landlords for renting to illegal aliens.

Council members say they think it may be too hard to enforce. Some Harrington residents who spoke with WBOC had different views on the proposed ordinance.

"I think it's wrong if you know that someone's an illegal immigrant, I believe it would be wrong to rent property to them," said Beth Baker.

But Guirlanie Wheeler said there would be problems enforcing the ordinance.

"There was no way of knowing who's a citizen, no way of knowing who's benefiting from these benefits, so I don't think it's a good idea," She said.

The proposed law would have required all landlords to check for a state issued ID before renting their property. It was scheduled to be discussed at Monday night's City Council meeting but was taken off the agenda after council members learned that it may not withstand a legal challenge in court.
