Baseball Bat Brawl Escalates Into Fatal Shooting

DURHAM, N.C. -- Three men have been charged with murder in connection with a weekend shooting at a Durham apartment complex, police said.

Luis Ramirez Ruiz, 21, Luis Miguel Hernandez Barraza, 23, and Roque Fonseca Hernandez, 24, have been charged with murder in connection with the slaying of 24-year-old Martin Martinez Vega, police said.

Several cars carrying a group of Hispanic males entered the Crossroads Apartments parking lot, on South Alston Avenue, shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday, and a fight involving baseball bats ensued, police said. During the scuffle, Vega was shot, and he died later at Duke University Medical Center, police said.

A second man was taken to Duke after suffering injuries in the baseball bat attack, police said.
