TN-Senate delays bill on proof of citizenship to vote
Senate delays bill on proof of citizenship to vote
April 16, 2009 11:05 AM ET
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The state Senate has delayed action on a proposal that would require proof of citizenship to register as a Tennessee voter.
Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, a Collierville Republican and the measure's main sponsor, said Thursday he decided to delay it after the proposal failed on a 3-3 tie in the House Elections Subcommittee the day before. Norris said he believes committee members are confused about what the bill would do and he wants to talk to them.
The proposal would require people seeking to register to vote to document their citizenship with driver's licenses, passports or birth certificates.
Current state law requires people to just check a box on an application affirming under threat of perjury that they are U.S. citizens.
