Texas House District 107 a familiar race for Allen Vaught, Bill Keffer

It's back to the future for voters in state House District 107.

Democratic Rep. Allen Vaught is defending his East Dallas seat against Republican and former Rep. Bill Keffer in one of the state's more competitive House elections.

Mr. Vaught won by 1,109 votes in 2006, defeating then-incumbent Mr. Keffer in the district, which stretches from Lakewood north to Lake Highlands.

Now the roles have changed, with Mr. Keffer fighting the tide of an increasingly Democratic-leaning district. GOP operatives fear that Libertarian candidate Brandon Parsons could siphon precious votes.

The candidates offer sharply differing views on pretty much every topic, from the Texas economy to taxes to illegal immigration.

Mr. Keffer says economic problems have "increased the volume" on the issue but that illegal immigration often takes over his discussions with voters.

"People want to hear you share their frustration and know you can do something about it," Mr. Keffer said, citing support for a photo ID bill and barring illegal immigrants from attending Texas universities.

Mr. Vaught, who supports a guest worker program, said the topic hardly ever comes up.

"I've yet to go to an event where I have someone tell me that that's the number one issue to them. When I'm talking to people, the number one issue to them is, 'What are you going to do with our electric bill?' It's the pocketbook issues like that," he said.
