Feds warn truckers about smuggling

The U.S. Border Patrol is warning commercial truck drivers they could lose their licenses for life if convicted of a smuggling-related offense.

Representatives of the agency explained to a gathering of more than 80 truck drivers Friday in Brownsville that Texas law allows them to pursue cancellation of commercial driver’s licenses.

A statement released Friday by Border Patrol said the initiative in partnership with the Texas Department of Public Safety has been dubbed “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Last fiscal year, nearly 70 cases were submitted for revocation following convictions for smuggling drugs or people.

Highways in South Texas, leading north from the U.S.-Mexico border, are major smuggling corridors. Both people and drugs are often hidden among shipments of legitimate goods.

They can and do take their license but the Mexican driver can go back to Mexico and get a duplicate license, they just can't use it to cross the border ever again. Their trucks are confiscated and sold at auction, just like American drivers arrested for smuggling.

Im sure that all the Mexican truck drivers and trucks the feds are now allowing to enter America freely without inspection are shaking in their boot!

Last month alone, 1,006 border crossings were reported from Mexico, drawing 735 inspections. Of all those inspections, just four trucks were taken out of service and four drivers weren’t allowed to continue. That means nearly every truck and driver has all the necessary paperwork and is passing safety inspections.

Those inspections, and the overall vigilance of properly maintaining cargo vehicles, regardless of nationality, indeed must continue for the betterment of trade and commerce amongst all three NAFTA nations . . .
