Immigrants caught picking mushrooms
JUNCTION CITY - Twenty-four illegal immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala were in the process of being deported Tuesday after being detained for picking mushrooms from areas burned during last summer's fires and selling them to stores and restaurants outside the area, Trinity County Sheriff's Department officials said Thursday.
Three other immigrants earlier were arrested on suspicion of trespassing and possessing fraudulent identification documents.
Officers from seven law enforcement agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, conducted the raid - the largest of its kind in Trinity County - above the Coopers Bar area of Junction City after residents complained of trespassing and open campfires left unattended in the forest.
Deputies said those who were detained had picked mushrooms that can be sold for about $50 per pound.
Harvesting mushrooms for commercial use requires a seasonal U.S. Forest Service permit.

And compensation for the money they lost selling the contraband which, of course, with adjustments made to avoid the lawsuit will come in at $50/per shroom instead of per pound..........

I certainly hope those mushrooms weren't psychedelic. California is still suffering from the great Haight-Ashbury acid trip of 1970.

It sounds like these poor people could not afford a permit and were only trying to earn a means to having a better life. Now, we will fly them home first class and they will be back here in 15 minutes to continue their dream of a better life. AAARGH!
