    Sheriff Joe Arpaio's deputies in Maricopa County arrested 40 suspected illegal immigrants in a 36-hour period ending Wednesday. Thirty-one were transferred into the custody of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

    The arrests came as a result of multiple traffic stops and an investigation into an apparent Mesa drophouse, according to a statement from MCSO.

    Nine of the suspects were booked into a county jail on human smuggling charges. The remaining 31 suspects were released into ICE custody in accordance with federal law.
