It’s still OK to do business in Friendswood if you speak Spanish.

By an overwhelming margin, the Friendswood city council Monday rejected a proposal to let voters decide if English should be the official language of the city.

The somewhat surprising vote, which failed 5-2, means voters in Friendswood won’t get the chance to cast ballots on a charter amendment that would require that all city business be conducted in English.

A large number of residents as well as civil rights groups, including LULAC protested against the proposal pitched by Councilman John LeCour.

LeCour and Mayor pro tem Chris Peden were the only ones to vote to put the measure on the May ballot.
