    http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articl ... 196/22579/

Glenn Beck Interviews Houston talk show host Michael berry on the shooting of the HPD Officer by an illegal alien.

    March 11, 2009 - 12:25 ET

GLENN: But let me switch gears and talk about something else that's on fire and that's Houston. We go to KTRH and Michael Berry who is afternoon talk show host on KTRH. Hey, Michael, how are you?

    BERRY: Hey, Glenn.

GLENN: Tell me the story of -- because this one, I have to tell you, it's setting -- blood's shooting out of my eyes on this one. Tell me the story about what happened with the police officer there in Houston.

BERRY: Well, unfortunately it's a pattern. It's an all too frequent occurrence, and this is quite a typical fact pattern. The Houston police department goes in to serve a narcotics warrant on a guy that they believe has multiple -- or they know has multiple arrests and they believe to be very dangerous. He has a $40,000 house with a $50,000 security system. They go to the door and take the burglar bars off. They have to pull them off with a car. And as they go in, the first officer in is a 54-year-old officer who's been on the force for 27 years, the top narcotics officer. And this guy's waiting inside and blast right off. We don't know if he's going to make it or not. He's clinging to life. We ask for your prayers. His name's Rick Salter, he's a decorated HPD officer. And two more officers step in and shoot the bad guy. Well, it turns out this bad guy has a record of crimes in the U.S. and in Mexico and this is quite typical. And you were talking about the Drudge Report. If you dig down and start looking, there are rich Mexicans fleeing to Houston because of the drug cartel there.

    GLENN: Yeah.

BERRY: But unfortunately the drug cartels are bringing their activities to Houston.

GLENN: So before we go on to Houston and the police officers, et cetera, et cetera, let me just understand this correctly. Was he here illegally?

BERRY: He was here illegally. We just learned that yesterday.

GLENN: And does he have an arrest warrant or did he have an arrest record or anything like that here? Did they know that he was here illegally?

BERRY: They did. He's actually been under order of deportation that was never served out. He's been deported before. He has a criminal record in Mexico and here and they were actually serving multiple warrants on him here. This is a really, really bad guy and unfortunately, Glenn, there are lots of these people that we're now discovering here.

GLENN: Okay. Now let's drill down a little deeper. Is your mayor -- what is the mayor's name?

    BERRY: Bill White.
GLENN: Is Bill White a sanctuary city lover?

BERRY: You know, he would protest that he's not, but the congressional research service, which is an objective nonpartisan research wing of the congress, says that we are a sanctuary city. It's not a city that is declared sanctuary. When I served on city council, there was actually an ordinance -- I mean a resolution that came up that would for all intents and purposes make us declared a sanctuary city and we were able to vote that down. But it is the case that congressional research service says when you're not cooperating enough with the federal police, when you're not making use of 287-G which allows local officers to be deputized as federal officers so they can enforce these laws, then for all intents and purposes you're becoming a sanctuary for dangerous illegals to come here. That's day labor sites, that's a number of different ways that people say if I'm coming into this country illegally, well, Houston's the best place to go; they've set up, they've made arrangements for me.

GLENN: Tell me about your chief of police.

BERRY: Our chief of police was elected to the international chief of police and in that capacity testified before congress that we don't have the manpower to go after these guys and that it would ruin relations with the Hispanic community if we did. I mean --

GLENN: Really? Wait a minute. Hang on, Michael. I just want to make sure. Houston, really? Really going to wreck the relations with the Hispanic community? What an insult to the Hispanic community. They like living with drug dealers and dangerous people that will shoot cops in the face right in their own neighborhood? Really? Wow, I didn't get that. I'm sorry. I thought Hispanics liked the law just as much as I did. I thought Hispanics liked their children to be safe and away from criminals and drug lords and everything else just as much as anybody else, no matter what their color is. Wow, what a weird thing I'm learning here. Wow, thank you for that.

BERRY: Well, and you know what's really amazing about that is how the liberal left of the Hispanic community has hijacked the agenda so that politicians that are pandering for that vote think, wow, I have to be for open borders, oh, I have to be for everything to be in two languages in order to get the Hispanic vote. Hispanics are about family, faith and hard work. That has nothing to do with them. But this leftist wing has hijacked the Hispanic agenda.

So this police chief testified before congress that it would wreck relations with the Hispanic community and it would pull off too much manpower. Manpower? We have officers stationed under the underpasses writing tickets for people not wearing their seat belt. We have -- he instituted a curfew last year for after 10:00. I mean, this is ridiculous. We have the manpower for all that. We have red light cameras. We have all these silly things that they're doing and yet they don't have the manpower to go after Mexican drug cartel members operating dangerous rings here.

GLENN: No. Here's the reason why. It doesn't give them any power. Quite honestly, I mean, I'd be interested to see if there was any kind of corruption. Is there anybody getting any money from these drugs? There's an awful lot of money, billions of dollars floating around by the bottom of our border. I'm wondering if any of that money is involved. It also doesn't get them anybody elected, and if they are going to arrest somebody and deport them, that cost the city something. You know, when you just do a ticket, that's income revenue. All they are doing is generating revenue. Congratulations, police officers of Houston. You are risking your life right now for a system that is using you as a tax collector.

BERRY: Here's the best part, Glenn, is that officers have done what they do. They've followed orders, they've done their jobs, but yesterday as a result of yet another officer critically injured, the head of the Houston police officers union held a big press conference and said, listen, no more. We want the law enforced. Our officers are in danger. And the way I look at it, if guys wearing badges and guns in uniforms with heavy equipment and backup are in danger of getting killed by them, what about you and I just walking around the streets? So they are really letting this boil over.

GLENN: Who is saying that? Who in the police department is saying that? Who has the courage to stand up against the mayor and the chief of police and say enough is enough; enforce our own laws? You know what, I have to tell you, I feel the same way about the border guards. I feel the same way about everybody who wears a badge or a uniform for this country: Stop selling these people out. They are risking their life for your children. They are risking their life for our freedom and our way of life. And what do we do? We put them in impossible situations, we tell them, well, you can't do this, you can't do this. When they are afraid for their own life, they draw their gun, they shoot and then what do we do? We crucify them for it. There is no way that these people are going to be able to last and withstand this onslaught of insanity. Who in your police force is brave enough to stand up against these people, Michael, because I want to put them on television, I want to put them on radio and I want the people of Houston and I want the people in your own -- you know what? Phoenix is the same way. I had the chief of police, I believe he was.

    BERRY: Arpaio.

GLENN: No, he's the sheriff. The police in Phoenix actually, actually had the balls -- and I let it slide, but I'm not letting it slide anymore. Actually had the balls to tell me that the kidnapping which makes now Phoenix the number two, number two kidnapping site in the world. I mean, you'd think that's Bogota, Colombia. No, no, no. It's Phoenix, Arizona. He actually had the balls to tell me, well, Glenn, but these are just, these are just illegals and those who are working in the drug community. Oh, I'm sorry. I thought they were human beings. I thought they were people. And like that makes my neighborhood safe to have a bunch of people that have guns and drugs and are illegal and are shooting each other or kidnapping each other. How does that make my neighborhood safe? Enough is enough.

BERRY: Doesn't do it at all. The guy's name is Gary Blankenship. He is the president of the Houston police officers union, and he's not a member of the department in terms of the top brass. He's the elected guy of the street patrol officers that walk the streets, ride the horses where the rubber had its the road and he has had enough and his members have had enough.

GLENN: Let me tell you something. If you listen to this show, you know I am big time antiunion, but I am antiunion because they're out of control. I'm antiunion because you need to have a balance. But once in a while a union is needed, and in this particular case and the case of the border guards, a damn union is needed, and I'll back this union all the way to the wall. You stop this nonsense. You are putting people's lives at danger. For what? For another vote? Michael, you follow -- will you follow this story for us and -- I'm sorry. What is the officer's name again?

BERRY: It's Gary Blankenship and as soon as anything --

GLENN: No, no, no. The officer that --

    BERRY: Rick Salter, S-A-L-T-E-R.

    GLENN: Does he have family?

BERRY: He does. He has a big family.

    GLENN: How old is he?

    BERRY: He's 54.

GLENN: How long has he been a police officer in Houston?

    BERRY: Twenty-seven years.

GLENN: America, what's going on is just not right. It's just not right. You know it and I know it. And I'm telling you this is -- you know, wait until you see the stuff that I'm going to bring you next hour on God. I'm telling you, if you don't stand up, if you don't let your voice be heard, if you won't stand shoulder and shoulder with our cops and say "I don't care if you call me a racist; I don't care what Mexico thinks about us. I am standing up for what is right and the people in Mexico who are coming here to get away from it don't want it to follow them." Stand up and have courage to stand up because I'm telling you it is under attack and, you know, I have said on this program over and over again America is always at her best when she's on the mat. It takes a beating before Americans realize, "Wait a minute, somebody's punching me in the face." Let me tell you, gang, they are punching you in the face and this one isn't a knockout that they're going for. They are looking to kill you. They are looking to kill our way of life. I'm telling you with everything in me, do not believe this bullcrap that they are, "Oh, no, we're just trying to be America." They are changing America fundamentally and it is not just the Republicans -- or the Democrats. It is the Republicans as well. They are looking for -- did you hear Tim Geithner on Charlie Rose? Tim Geithner on Charlie Rose says, "well, what we've got coming towards us now is a new system of capitalism. It isn't the same as what we all had before. It's a new capitalist kind of system." Well, I'd like somebody to ask me if I want that system of capitalism. I'd like somebody to describe what that system of capitalism is. I know I studied a system of capitalism, but this one has the government at the table. That's not capitalism. That's socialism, and I'm not going to play your little PC game anymore. You can't just rename things and expect us to play ball. We see where that has gone. We see that you call, you know, you c hange from red ink to purple ink and everything's solved. Nothing is solved by changing words, the meaning of words or colors of pens. Wrong is wrong. Right is right. Enough. Enough.

Michael, boy, sorry to unload on you. Would you do me a favor. Would you pass on the numbers to Blankenship so we can get a hold of him? I think we've had him on the program before.

BERRY: I will do so. Thank you, Glenn.

GLENN: You bet. And follow this story for us, Michael. Thank you very much.

    BERRY: Thank you.

GLENN: Wait, wait, wait. Is there a fund for this police officer or is it too early?

BERRY: There is. It's with an organization called Assist the Officer. We have a program if an officer gets killed, there's an automatic amount of money, but we had an officer severely injured who founded an organization for those who are severely injured and it's called Assist the Officer and I'll send all the information to your people. It's in Houston.

    GLENN: Thanks, Michael.

    BERRY: You bet, Glenn.

GLENN: Michael Berry from KTRH, our affiliate in Houston, Texas. Is it just me? It can't be just me. We've played by the rules. We've done everything we're supposed to do, but nobody is playing fair anymore. Nobody is doing the right thing anymore.

Yesterday there was testimony on the Hill that the card check bill, what is it, the free choice of America bullcrap? Union members don't even want this. Union members don't want card check! They think that it might be abused. These people in congress, they don't give a flyin' crap. Yesterday there was testimony that it will hurt the unemployment numbers from 1 to 3%. And if you don't believe it, well, then you are not using common sense. Why do you think CitiBank was downgrading Wal-Mart yesterday? Because they are not going to be able to sell their groceries as cheaply because they are going to have all kinds of union rules on them. These people are putting nails into our coffin and they don't care! They just think that we can just last through anything. They don't care.

You know, Democrats, I have to ask you. I come from -- my grandparents were Democrats. My aunt and uncle were Democrats. Almost everybody in my family was a Democrat. They were good, decent people, and I believe Democrats are good, decent people. They're not communists. They're not trying to destroy America. The voters are not those kinds of people. But apparently there's either enough of those who are voting these people in or you're just dead inside. I'd like to know which one it is. I mean, it took a long time for the Republicans to wake up. The people who were just, you know, "I'm just an elephant and, hey, my guy's the right guy." At least they woke up. At least they stood up and said, wait a minute, they are betraying all of my values. They are betraying everything. And at least we said, "You know what, our party sucks." When are you going to stand up? When you say you're for children and education and yet for union promises, for union gifts you're going to take kids out of some of the best schools in Washington D.C. that are going with vouchers and you're going to put them into the jaws of death. You are going to put them in the most dangerous, awful schools you could possibly imagine, places that you would never put your children in. And you are doing that for what reason? What reason? Are you getting something out of it? Did you get a new bridge for your state? What did you get? Oh, are you getting some more health insurance? Good. Throw children into the jaws of death for your welfare package or your bridge, or what is it? Have some principles, please, for the love of God.

The majority of our government is more interested in creating a new voter base while tossing aside the one they have by sacrificing our rule of law and it is TREASON, NOT TO MENTION THE AIDING AND ABETTING OF ILLEGAL ALIENS! If this wasn't the case, we would be here talking about all of this. IT'S OUR GOVERNMENT THAT IS AT FAULT. A strong will to enforce our immigration laws is what is lacking.

The City of Houston has no excuse. Bill White and the Houston City Council have made it clear Houston is a sanctuary city. So illegal alien scumbags like Alfaro come here in droves. Not only is White and the City Council guilty but White appointee to Chief of Police Harold Hurtt is just as guilty. had HPD done its job and insisted ICE come get this scum bag the 1st time he was arrested after the deportation, the following two arrest would have never happened and officer Salter would not be in the hospital.

I am honestly getting fed up with this "Hispanic" pandering that is going on in our government. My wife is so called Hispanic and she detest scumbags like this. She wants the same thing every other American taxpayers wants, a safe secure city to live in . Not some out of control 3rd world country taken over buy criminals, pedophiles, drug dealers and murders.

How much safer are those of us who live in the suburbs of Houston and depend on Harris County Sheriffs 's Department? Our newly elected Democratic Sheriff was quoted saying the following: "I haven’t decided whether I will continue to allow federal immigration officials to screen inmates at the Jail. My predecessor authorized the screenings in late 2006 after the execution-style murder of Houston police officer Rodney Johnson by an illegal immigrant, a murder that outraged the police and the community."

So Harris County is now a sanctuary county as well.
