AURORA — Police have identified the man who shot a 17-year-old Aurora Central High School girl outside the school on Monday.

Luis Guzman-Rincon, 19, is in the Arapahoe County Jail on $100,000 bond. He faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Guzman-Rincon is an illegal immigrant, according to police. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have placed a hold on him.

Karina Vargas is recovering from her injuries after she was shot in the torso while talking with friends outside the school Monday afternoon.

Police say the shooting could be gang related. Witnesses at the scene said two gangs were outside the school that day arguing. Vargas was not part of altercation, however.

AURORA, Colo. – A 19-year-old suspected illegal immigrant has been arrested for allegedly shooting a 17-year-old girl near Aurora Central High School on Monday.

Luis Guzman-Rincon was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and was being held in the Arapahoe County Jail for investigation of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Authorities say the shooting may have been gang-related.

The teen victim and her friends were talking to people in a brown pickup when another car drove up and someone shot into the crowd, witnesses said.

The 17-year-old sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was driven by friends to nearby University Hospital.

"We understand there's a lot of questions in the community about the events that led to the shooting. The victim's role and what she was doing before the shooting, her relationship to the shooter. These are all things we are learning about," said Friel.

Guzman-Rincon was being held in lieu of $100,000 bond. A hold has also been placed on him by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). His mug shot was not released.

Just terrible, if this was anyone but an illegal this would be top national news....well maybe the msm is still so focused on Obama nothing else seems to matter. But how horrible a school shooting less than 20 miles from columbine and no coverage. Pray for the victim and give thanks that it was not worse. The tragedy of illegal immigration lives on.

Judge raises bail for alleged shooter of ACHS student

AURORA | Bail for a man accused of shooting an Aurora Central High School student last week has been increased from $100,000 to $500,000, according to jail records.

Luis Guzman-Rincon, 19, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the Dec. 7 shooting near Central.

He appeared in Arapahoe County Court on Monday where a judge increased his bail.

Guzman-Rincon, who police say may be in the country illegally, is also being held on a warrant from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to jail records, he is next due in court Feb. 10.

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. last Monday at the intersection of East 11th Avenue and Newark Street, just a few yards from the campus’ northern edge.

Police said when officers arrived at the scene, the victim had already been rushed to a local hospital by friends in a purple Acura Integra.

The victim has been identified as Karina Vargas, 17, a Central High junior. Police haven’t said publicly whether the girl was in a car or in the street when she was shot, but a spokesman said the department knows that information.

Witnesses said there was supposed to be a fight between gang members at the intersection around the time of the shooting, but police said the victim was not involved in any altercation before she was shot.

Police confirmed last week that the shooting was gang related and said more people could be arrested in connection with the shooting.

The arrest affidavit against Guzman-Rincon, which details some of the evidence against him, has been sealed.
