By George Osgood

WAYLAND -- Steuben County sheriff's deputies have turned four men believed to be illegal immigrants from Mexico over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Deputies arrested the four men Thursday afternoon at a sobriety checkpoint on Route 21 in Wayland.

According to a news release from the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, deputies attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Antonio Chavez-Hernandez, 56, who failed initially to stop.

A deputy running alongside the vehicle finally got Chavez-Hernandez to stop on the far side of the checkpoint, police wrote.

Deputies charged Chavez-Hernandez with failure to comply with a police officer, driving without a license and failing to wear a seat belt.

They charged front-seat passenger Juan Carlos-Torres, 29, with failing to wear a seat belt and possessing an open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

Deputies charged Cecilio Olmedo-Diaz, no age given, with possessing an open container of alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

The fourth occupant, identified as Rodrigo Gonzalez-Mendez, 24, was not charged.

During an investigation, deputies determined that the four Mexicans entered the U.S. illegally.
