PHOENIX -- Sen. John McCain and former Congressman J.D. Hayworth apparently will hold at least one debate during their Republican primary battle for McCain's Senate seat.

Hayworth delivered a letter to McCain's Phoenix campaign office on Thursday, suggesting a series of debates. A McCain spokesman said the senator "is willing to debate all certified candidates," but stopped short of agreeing to the large number of debates Hayworth wants.

After delivering the letter Thursday, Hayworth said, "I've invited the senator to join us in -- if it's more of a comfort level -- joint town hall appearances, or more properly, debates in all 15 Arizona counties administered by that county's Republican Party."

McCain's office called Hayworth's visit a "desperate publicity stunt," noting that, at the time of Hayworth's visit, McCain was attending President Barack Obama's Health Care Summit in Washington.

Hayworth, asked why he showed up when he knew McCain was out of town, said, "Schedules are difficult to coordinate."
