Border Patrol agents foiled a brazen smuggling attempt Friday afternoon near Brownsville.

Agents watched a Ford Ranger loaded with bundles float across the Rio Grande near Brownsville, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. When the Ford reached the riverbank, the driver headed north.

Border Patrol approached the Ford, prompting the driver to reverse — straight into the river.

Smugglers swam back to Mexico and recovered at least 44 bundles of what appeared to be narcotics.

"The agents’ vigilance and quick response prevented the narcotics from entering our country," according to the news release.
