BOSTON -- A former Salvadoran military official accused of colluding in the 1989 deaths of six Jesuit priests is being released on bail on an immigration charge in Massachusetts.
Inocente Orlando Montano was among 20 Salvadorans indicted in Spain earlier this year in the slayings during El Salvador's 12-year civil war. It's unclear whether he will be extradited to Spain.
The 69-year-old Montano has been living under his own name in Everett, Mass. He was charged Tuesday with making false statements on applications for temporary protected status in the U.S. in 2002.
On Wednesday, a magistrate judge agreed to release Montano on a $50,000 unsecured bond to his sister's house in Saugus (SAW'-guhs).
Montano had previously denied involvement in the slayings. His attorney, Oscar Cruz, declined to comment Wednesday.
