    Mexico challenges U.S. over structures

    Mexico challenges U.S. over structures

    Embassy occupying street, officials say

    By Mark Stevenson

MEXICO CITY – The drug war. Immigration reform. Escalating violence along the border. As if Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't have enough to worry about on her first visit to Mexico as secretary of state, some leading leftists accuse the United States of stealing a city street in the nation's capital.

The U.S. Embassy has illegally occupied the side street, they say, with metal barricades and a sheet-metal canopy erected years ago to provide order and shade for an estimated 2,000 Mexicans applying each day for U.S. visas.

As Mexico prepares for midterm elections in July, the issue has become, well, political.

Take down the canopy and let the Mexicans stand on the sidewalk in the hot summer sun and see if that makes them happy.

We have laws in this country that require permitting for everything, and in some cases, even permitting to paint your house purple and orange, which could ruin neighborhood aesthetics. I have no idea if Mexico has any similar laws and building restrictions. If they do, they should not accuse our embassy if they had legal permission to build the structures. They should go after the government that granted the permits, work to change the laws if they are too lax, or if there are no laws, get some in place. I doubt that the US embassy violated anything, so quit griping until there is evidence to the contrary.

I say stop processing 2000 people a day for visa's, limit it to 5 a day and they can all fit in the building and not cause a parking problem
