Immigrant-rights advocates to meet Saturday in Riverside
Latino and immigrant-rights advocates have called a meeting in Riverside on Saturday to organize public support for immigrant-amnesty and guest-worker programs and opposition to an enforcement-oriented immigration bill in Congress.

Armando Navarro, National Alliance for Human Rights coordinator, said he expects hundreds of people to attend the Mexicano/Latino Leadership Bi-National Summit at Riverside Convention Center.

Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez, D-Los Angeles, will speak in a pre-recorded video to the gathering in opposition to the bill authored by Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis. The bill, H.R. 4437, passed the House last year and is pending in the U.S. Senate.

Mexican Sen. Reymundo Cardenas, who represents the state of Zacatecas, will also attend, Navarro said.

The opposition campaign began last month with a similar meeting in San Bernardino. Saturday's meeting is intended to find ways to "pressure the Senate by lobbying and whatever it takes to defeat the Sensenbrenner bill," Navarro said. "We need to show our power."
