Legislator Wants Use Of Mexican ID Stopped

RALEIGH -- A North Carolina legislator wants state and local governments to stop using identification cards issued by the Mexican consulate as a valid ID, saying the trustworthiness of the cards is questionable.

A House judiciary subcommittee debated Wednesday but did not vote on a measure to remove those cards from a list of reliable documents to establish residency to get a driver's license, obtain auto insurance or enroll in Medicaid. Local governments also could not accept the consulate IDs.

Rep. George Cleveland of Onslow County said illegal immigrants use the card to remain in the state.

Democratic Rep. Larry Hall, of Durham, raised concerns about the bill. Durham City Council agreed in November to allow its police and other departments to treat the card like any other valid ID.

O.K. Somebody please refresh my memory. Didn't NC supposedly stop giving driver's licenses to illegals a few years back? Seems like I remember Alipac leading the charge and winning on that one. Am I wrong?

And what's this about using a matricula card to enroll in medicaid? Only illegal aliens have need for a mexican consulate card, so why are these foreign card holders utilizing our medicaid system?

everyone knows the marticular cards are only given out to those illegally in the country. and everyone knows that these cards are not even accepted in mexico as legal forms of ID
