(Calexico Port deportations)…Officials say 60,000 illegal immigrants were deported through the Downtown Port last year.

The numbers released came from the Mexican Consulate in Calexico. The Consulate is charged with providing deportees with a small amount of money and repatriating them with their place of residence in Mexico. The Consulate also said 18 people drowned in the All American Canal last year trying to enter the United States illegally. They said the 19 year old from Puebla, Mexico who drowned in the canal this week was the first for the New Year. They also expressed a hope that the publicity over that tragedy would serve to deter others from using the All American as an entry point. Buoys and ladders were installed in the Canal at intervals last year in an attempt to reduce drownings.
