Ore. plant raided after probe into illegal hiring

Ore. plant raided after probe into illegal hiring

    Associated Press - June 12, 2007 4:23 PM ET

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Federal agents have raided the offices of a food processing plant in Oregon that's suspected of employing hundreds of illegal workers.

According to an affidavit filed by a special agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, only 48 of nearly 600 employees at the Fresh Del Monte Produce fruit and vegetable processing plant have valid Social Security numbers.

Authorities say workers used Social Security numbers that belonged to other people or were made up.

An official with the Department of Homeland Security says about 100 workers have been placed under administrative arrest to be processed for possible deportation.

Prosecutors say a federal grand jury has indicted three people on criminal charges, but the indictment remains under seal.

If that's true, why were only 100 placed under administrative arrest? By the way, what in the heck is "administrative arrest?

Jaded - thanks for catching this one.

I just learned of this driving down the road in the last hour or so (I live VERY close by...).

I'll post some updates as they occur.

I have already heard via local media, that there are protesters out videotaping the ICE agents involved and doing the usual pandering.

I'll be calling ICE and telling them THANKS.

Administrative arrest usually means the person is served with a warrant and given a date to appear in court - much like a civil summons.

Thanks, I figured it was something like that. I guess, regardless of what Frick and Frack (Chertoff & Bush) are saying, it's safe to say assume catch & release is still thriving.
