McCain emphasizes border security during debate
McCain emphasizes border security during debate
By JACQUES BILLEAUD (AP) – 33 minutes ago
PHOENIX — Republican Sen. John McCain framed the porousness of America's borders as both a national security concern and a human rights issue Sunday in the only scheduled general election debate in Arizona's U.S. Senate race.
Democratic challenger Rodney Glassman says McCain's emphasis on border security was meant to further the four-term senator's political future.
The issue of America's porous borders, illegal immigration and drug violence in Mexico took center stage at the debate.
McCain emphasized that the U.S. must first secure the border before it confronts the economic realities that motivate people to come into the country illegally.
Glassman says the country has to find a way to let foreign workers come into the country legally.
