US Congressman Proposes Immigration Bill
9/4/2007

Williamson County’s representative in Washington is rolling out a new five-part immigration plan this week. Congressman John Carter says he thinks other plans have failed because they tried to do too many things at the same time.

Carter says the first in the series – to be put forward this week – focuses on enforcing laws already on the books. Other parts of his plan give local police agencies the authority and funding to arrest people in the country illegally. He also has a plan for employers to sponsor undocumented workers.

The Republican congressman says he hopes the Democratic majority in Congress will allow his bills to move forward. Carter says he came up with his plan with help from his Hispanic Council – made up of Latino leaders in Williamson County.
