MCALLEN – Twenty-one-year old Carlos Javier Paez Renteria stood before the judge Thursday.
He said he lived in McAllen. He worked running weapons and military equipment for the Gulf Cartel. It's what he chose to do. He didn't make enough money as a day laborer in the city.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS went to where he stood months before. Turns out, workers there are often offered illegal jobs for a quick buck. We've hidden the workers’ faces to protect their identities.
This busy street is all but that for these men. It has been slow for the day laborers on Bicentennial in McAllen. They need work.
One man said he has been out there since 7 a.m. He always is. It's nearly 2 now. It doesn't look like he'll make money today.
At times it's good, at times it's bad, he says. It gets worse when the boss doesn't pay. We heard that story a lot.
It takes a lot to stay honest. Not all work solicited is legit.
