Ala. panel: Military ID can prove citizenship
Ala. panel: Military ID can prove citizenship

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A House committee took the first step toward making changes to Alabama’s tough new immigration law.
The House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee approved a bill Wednesday that will allow military service members to buy car tags and complete other business transactions by showing a military identification card instead of a driver’s license. The immigration law approved last year requires people to show proof of citizenship to make such transactions.
The sponsor of the bill, Republican Rep. Steve Clouse of Ozark, said it clarifies that a military identification card will be accepted as proof of citizenship.
Clouse said it’s an important issue in his southeast Alabama district, which includes the Fort Rucker Army base.
Gov. Robert Bentley and legislative leaders are working on several changes to the immigration law.
